How Much Fabric Do You Need to Make a Skirt? Yardage Guide for Common Skirt Styles

How Much Fabric Do You Need to Make a Skirt?

One of the most common sewing questions is also one of the most important: how much fabric do I need?

The answer depends on the style of skirt, your size, the width of the fabric, and whether the print has a directional layout. But for many common woven fabrics around 57 inches / 145 cm wide, you can use a simple starting guide.

Approximate Skirt Yardage Guide

Pencil Skirt or Straight Skirt
Usually about 1.2 to 1.8 yards

This is one of the most fabric-efficient skirt styles. Because the shape is narrow and close to the body, it does not require much fullness. It is often a good choice for beginners who want something practical and wearable.

A-Line Skirt

Usually about 1.5 to 2.3 yards

An A-line skirt needs more fabric than a straight skirt because of the flare. It is still relatively manageable and is one of the easiest skirt styles to sew and wear.

Gathered Skirt or Tiered Skirt

Usually about 2 to 3.5 yards

This depends heavily on how full you want it to be. More gathers mean more fabric. Tiered skirts can use even more, especially if they are midi or maxi length.

Circle Skirt or Full Circle Skirt

Usually about 2.5 to 4.5+ yards

This style uses the most fabric because of the sweep and shape. A full circle skirt can be dramatic and beautiful, but it is definitely not the most economical choice for fabric usage.

What Changes the Yardage?

A few things can increase how much fabric you need:
• larger sizes
• longer skirts
• directional prints
• border prints
• matching stripes or checks
• extra fullness
• wide waistbands or added details

A Simple Rule of Thumb

If you want the shortest version of the answer, here it is:

The straighter and shorter the skirt, the less fabric it uses.
The fuller and longer the skirt, the more fabric it needs.

Because Bubbo is especially focused on fabrics for dresses and skirts, we always recommend thinking about the final silhouette before buying. The same fabric can feel completely different in a clean A-line skirt versus a gathered one.
