Does that mean the label is wrong?
Not necessarily.
Cotton is a fiber, not a single fabric type. The final feel of a cotton fabric depends on the yarn, weave, weight, finishing process, and any additional fibers blended into it. A lightweight cotton lawn can feel almost silky, while a heavy cotton canvas feels dry and firm. Both can still be 100% cotton.
At home, it is possible to gather useful clues about a fabric’s composition, but no single test can confirm the answer with complete certainty. The most reliable approach is to compare several characteristics together.
Why Cotton Fabrics Can Feel So Different
Before testing a fabric, it helps to understand why cotton does not always feel like the cotton you expect.
Yarn Fineness
Cotton made from fine, smooth yarns often feels much softer and silkier than cotton made from thicker yarns.

Compare the Fabric Before and After Washing
Washing is one of the most useful home tests because it can remove temporary finishes.
Cut a small sample and wash it using the method you would normally use for the finished garment.
